Creating Photoshop files from Adobe Premiere Pro

If you have Adobe Photoshop 7 or later installed, then from Adobe Premiere Pro, you can create a new Photoshop file (PSD) with dimensions and a pixel aspect ratio equal to your project settings. Working with an optimized PSD file ensures that the image is properly formatted for DV. When you are finished working with the PSD file in Photoshop, just save and close it, and, depending on the preference you select, Adobe Premiere Pro automatically adds it to your project. Use the Edit Original command to move between the two programs as often as necessary to refine your PSD file.

Adobe Premiere Pro sets up these optimized PSD files by launching a PSD template that matches your project settings. Default templates are included in the Adobe Premiere Pro/Document Templates folder. You can also create your own templates that match your commonly used project requirements.

To create a new PSD file from Adobe Premiere Pro:

  1. Choose File > New > Photoshop File.
  2. Enter a name for your Photoshop file.
  3. Select Add To Project (Merged Layers) if you want the new file to appear in your Adobe Premiere Pro project. Deselect this option to save the file to disk, but not place it in your project.
  4. Click Save.

To create or modify a template:

  1. Open Photoshop and create a new document with the settings you prefer. Be sure to designate the document as having rectangular pixels, if necessary. You can also create other elements specifically for your default document, such as a special background color or text. See Adobe Photoshop Help for information on creating a new document in Photoshop.
  2. Save the document using the naming convention of the installed default templates (for example, 720x480x0.9.psd), or any name that distinguishes it for your purposes.
