Toolbar > Render Scene button > Render Scene dialog > Current Renderers rollout
Rendering menu > Render > Render Scene dialog > Current Renderers rollout
The Current Renderers rollout displays which renderers are assigned to the production, draft, and interactive reshading categories.
Production: Production renderings are typically used for final output.
Draft: Draft renderings are typically used for preview purposes. Another use of the draft category is to maintain a separate set of rendering parameters (for example, a different output resolution or a different file format).
ActiveShade: ActiveShade helps you preview the effects of lighting and material changes in the scene.
At the bottom of the Render Scene dialog are radio buttons that choose which renderer is active: production, draft, or ActiveShade.
The Quick Render flyout on the toolbar also chooses which renderer to use:
For example, when you click Quick Render (Draft), this makes the draft renderer active in the Render Scene dialog, as well.
You generate a production rendering by choosing Production at the bottom of the Render Scene dialog, or by clicking Quick Render (Production).
These are the renderers that ship with the software:
MAX Default Scanline A-Buffer Rollout
VUE File Renderer (not available for ActiveShade)
Additional renderers might be available if you have installed them as plug-ins.
Note: In versions prior to v4, you selected the production and draft renderers in the Rendering tab of the Preferences dialog.

For each rendering category, the rollout shows the name of the renderer currently assigned, and an Assign button that lets you change the assignment.
Assign—Click to change the renderer assignment. The Assign buttons display a Choose Renderer dialog.
