Free Area Light (Photometric)

Create panel > Lights > Photometric Lights > Free Area button

Create menu > Lights > Free Area Light

A free area light has no target object. You use transforms to aim the light. A free area light can have two types of distribution:

Procedures

To create a Free Area light:

  1. On the Create panel, click Lights.

  2. Choose Photometric from the drop-down list. (Standard is the default.)

  3. In the Object Type rollout, click Free Area.

  4. Click the viewport location where you want the light to be.

    The light is now part of the scene. It points away from you in the viewport you clicked.

  5. Set the creation parameters.

    You can position the light and adjust its direction with the transform tools. You can also adjust the light's position with the Place Highlights command.

To adjust the light:

  1. Select the light.

  2. On the Main toolbar, click Rotate. Drag the selection to adjust the light.

    Tip: You can also adjust the light's position with the Place Highlights command.

To change a viewport to a light view:

  1. Right-click the viewport label.

    The viewport right-click menu is displayed.

  2. Choose Views.

    The name of each light is displayed in the Views list. By default, Free Area lights are named FArea01, FArea02, and so on.

  3. Choose the name of the light you want.

    The viewport now shows the light's point of view. You can use the Light viewport controls to adjust the light.

The default keyboard shortcut for Light viewports is $.
