Using any of the selection tools, you can select one or more objects by dragging the mouse to define a region around them.
By default, when you drag the mouse a rectangular region is created. When you release the mouse all objects within and touched by the region are selected. The following topics describe how you can change each of these settings.

The type of region you define when you drag the mouse is set by the Region flyout button to the right of the Select Object button. You can choose four types of region:
Rectangular Region—Dragging the mouse creates a rectangular region. See Rectangular Selection Region.
Circular Region—Dragging the mouse creates a circular region. See Circular Selection Region.
Fence Region—Dragging the mouse and clicking repeatedly creates an irregular region. See Fence Selection Region.
Lasso Region—Dragging the mouse creates an irregular region. See Lasso Selection Region.
Two items in the Edit menu let you set the method for selecting objects by region.
Choose Edit menu > Region to display a submenu of the following two items. Only one can be active at a time.
Window—Selects only those objects that are within the region. See Region > Window.
Crossing—Selects all objects that are within the region and crossing the boundaries of the region. This is the default region. See Select Region Crossing .
The Window/Crossing toggle on the toolbar also switches between these two modes.
To make a region selection using defaults:
Click Select Object.
Drag the mouse to define a region.
A rubber-band rectangle appears.
Release the mouse button to select all objects within or touching the region.
The selected objects turn white.
You can also use the Select and Transform buttons on the toolbar to select by region. You must start defining the region over an unselectable area of the viewport. Otherwise, you’ll transform the object beneath your mouse when you begin to drag.
