"there's a feature in 3DSMax that lets you replace models with
lower version ones so your hardware can handle it
easier while you work on it but still uses the high
poly version when rendering. I forgot what it's called
but it should help ease the load off your PC."
what is it????

Try the multires modifier. For things far from the camera you can reduce
the polygon count. |

If you're using the same version as me (5.1) it should
be included along with the examples. Click the bar at
the top to open the help menu and click 'Tutorials'.
Search for 'XRef' and/or 'marsandsun.max'. The
tutorial will load a 100,000 polygon battleship into a
scene, and then teach you how to replace it with a low
poly model made up of only a few dozen polygons. The
program will use the highpoly version when rendering.
You can't modify the XRef objects directly since it's
just a reference, but it'll help a lot when you're
dealing with high poly models you don't usually modify
(like trees or buildings)

Thanks! I totally forgot about that one. I never use it much since I can
get away with reasonably sized models. |
